This is the new development thread for the online version of Puzzle Strike (as opposed to the physical chips game). I'm Thelo, the main programmer behind fantasystrike.com, and I'll post all updates to the game in here. You can report any bugs you find in this thread, too.

Here are the basic controls of the game:

    - Hold R-mouse button or spacebar to zoom on any chip
    - Drag chips to the table (or double-click them) to play them
    - The top shelf is the bank. You can click on the shelf itself to view all the bank chips at once, zoomed-in.

To learn more about the game itself, check out the Guide, or play the tutorial.

Don't be afraid to report bugs and problems - we actively want to improve, and will never punish you for explaining bugs. When reporting bugs, don't forget to give as much information about the bug as you can. Screenshots and excerpts from the game log are often useful, and help me fix bugs faster. Giving the name of your internet browser and operating system is also useful.

    Enjoy the game!

    Recent changes:

    2014-07-02 update:
    - Fixed some bugs that could break Quick Matches, making them not count for rankings and sometimes leaving "phantom rooms" in the match browser
    - Fixed a Puzzlebot hang where it would try to react with an illegal Rocket Punch

    2014-06-17 update:
    - Fixed the bug where 1/21 of the time, a random select character choice would start a bugged game without any character, where you instantly lose
    - Fixed Mistress's Command controlling reactions when auto-passing because the opponent has no playable chips left in hand
    - Fixed Mistress's Command not fully controlling Radiant Healing properly
    - Fixed various issues with rematch buttons not working properly
    - Fixed being able to illegally react to sent gems with unsuitable purple shield chips when you might, according to public information, react with a suitable purple shield chip

    2014-04-29 update:
    - 3P and 4P quickmatch games will now count for rankings like 2P games

    2013-10-28 update:
    - Fixed Combinatorics not immediately going to discard when playing it at gempile height 5 or less
    - Fixed Mistress's Command illegally controlling the opponent's reactions
    - Fixed the "Starting player" changing to target a spectator sitting into a player seat
    - Fixed Panic Time increasing when a 3P/4P game becomes a tiebreaker from "eliminating" a player
    - Fixed Riposte illegally being able to return itself
    - Fixed the Edit Bank / Random Bank rematch buttons disappearing when canceling out of the Edit Bank screen
    - The webpage's bottom bar now properly shows your current game's character's ranking

    2013-08-06 update:
    - Added a short delay when playing blue shield reactions, to make sure the players actually see them played to the table
    - Tweaked the process for rejecting queued commands - it's now less strict than the previous one, but stricter than the one before that.
    - "New game" commands now never get rejected
    - Fixed counter-crash overruns playing the "gem falls into the gempile" animation twice
    - Fixed the P2 discard button so it really shows P2's discard instead of P1's
    - Simplified Combos Are Hard's selection with the new UI so that the top chip of a bank stack is always the one that glows red

    - Fixed getting guestified when changing games after being connected for a long time
    - Fixed some URLs not getting converted to clickable links in chat
    - Fixed Internet Explorer's z-index ordering bug for the cast page (notably for Zane)
    - Fixed /help causing subsequent chat lines to be incorrectly positioned

    2013-07-30 update:
    - The hand background now dims when it's not your turn to act, and re-colors and flashes white once it's your turn to act again
    - Return of the win tokens! Win tokens are stars appearing near your character, and count the number of games you won in the current session. They now also appear in custom games, not just in Quick Matches.
    - Smaller, tighter chat bubbles, that cover up less of the screen for no reason
    - Proper gameover screen, with rematch options, like Yomi
    - Rematch options now also appear in custom games, not just in Quick Matches. In custom games rematches, the host can change the bank at will, and all players can change characters at will, so it's just a more convenient shortcut for going back to the lobby and changing things.
    - Fixed a few QM-related bugs (mostly about guests rejoining QMs)
    - Removed zooming on incoming gempile gems
    - Added an info button on the character select screen that explains the gold / token system on mouseover, and links to the Store on click

    2013-07-23 update:
    - The server is now stricter in preventing accidental queuing of commands. The game will beep if the server rejects a move that was queued too fast.
    - Playing Master Puzzler now gives you one full timer bar
    - Fixed "after the attack" reactions against Pleasure & Pain so they actually happen after Pleasure & Pain finishes resolving
    - DeGrey's ghost no longer visually covers the timer
    - Fixed spectators being able to illegally see Geiger's bag when he plays Research & Development
    - The outlined font now has more visually distinct 1s and 7s

    2013-07-13 update:
    - Hopefully fixed the streaming bug where the game would not start properly, even though it was downloaded correctly
    - Fixed spectators having incorrect hand visibility

    2013-07-11 update:
    General:
    - Fixed title blinking when the game itself has input focus (rather than the webpage)
    - Fixed Leaderboards page not showing the eleventh place

    Puzzle Strike:
    - The game now auto-sorts the gempile to prevent big gems from getting over 10 height
    - Now auto-extending the gempile extension's hitbox for very large gempiles
    - Now preventing zooming on gempile gems (it has no purpose anymore)
    - The bag button now properly shows you the bag view when it's legal to do so
    - Moved the Pause button from the menu to the bottom bar of the main screen
    - Now showing actual messages about why you can't buy some chips during the buy phase (not enough money, Flagstone Tax or Dragon Form restrictions, multiple wound restriction)
    - FFA games now only award gold medals, not silver or bronze medals (there is no real "second place" in the current FFA rules, this should have been done a long time ago)
    - Fixed a category of QM-related bugs triggered by players leaving the QM room
    - Fixed the Bank select screen getting reverted when a player joins the room or changes player seats
    - Fixed X-Copy illegally targeting Iron Defense Crash Gems

    - Now allowing reaction Improvisation to pass without playing a chip from your hand
    - Blues are Good (main) now lets you pass without retrieving a blue-bannered chip
    - Fixed Knockdown's effect in multiplayer
    - Fixed reaction Gems to Gemonade in multiplayer giving gempower to the reactor instead of to the target of a crash

    2012-04-25 update:
Referrals, game invites, Facebook, game page bottom bar:

    - Friend referrals. By clicking on the "N friends recruited" part of the new bottom bar on the game page, you can get a recruitment link to fantasystrike.com. If someone makes an account on fs.com using that link, and gets to Master 1 in any game, you get a recruitment bonus of 3200 gold, the price of a Yomi or PS character.

    - Alternatively, you can click on any friend in the new Facebook Friends tab on the game page to get the option of sending them a recruitment link directly from Facebook. This works the same way: anyone signing up from there who gets to Master 1 gets you 3200 gold. The bottom bar counts the number of friends recruited that way (i.e. the number of times you won the 3200 gold recruitment bonus).

    - This new Facebook Friends tab shows whether your friends are online or not (and their fs.com name, if they're already on fs.com), and also lets you send them a direct game invite if they have a fs.com account. When they click on your game invite link, they'll load the game page and immediately enter your current game. (If your game has a password, they still have to type that password.)

    - You can also copy-paste a game invite link directly from the settings pane (gear icon) during a match.

    - The bottom bar also has more helpful things: your Gold amount, your current Quick Match rank, the language selection flags, the download progress bar, and the general mute button.

    - Note that because of the new Facebook friends list feature, the next time you log to fs.com through Facebook, you'll be asked to confirm permission to look at your friends' online presence (only happens once - we only use this to display your friends' status to you)

    2011-12-20 update:
    Puzzle Strike:
    - Combine now gives +black again, but removes $1 on play.

    2011-12-19 update:

    - Updated Maximum Anarchy (Zane purple): All players discard their hands, then draw that many chips. Each player may play a puzzle chip on his turn. You may play Crash Potato from hand.
    - Updated Into Oblivion (Menelker brown): Remove a [puzzle] bank stack from the game. If a stack was previously removed, return it to the game.
    - Updated Combine (4 purple orb): No black arrow. You may play a [crash] or [puzzle].

    PS:

    - Quick Matches between two Master-ranked players now use Medium match timer, instead of Slow

    Website:
    - Started the GOLD TEST. During gold test, everyone starts with a bunch of gold, and the gold you gain for playing Quick Matches is ridiculously high, but regular character access rules will be in effect:
-- If a character is free this week, you can play it all you want.
-- If a character isn't free that week, you must own it in order to play it. You can buy characters with gold at the Store (linked in topright of the page).
-- During gold test, you can't be a subscriber, so you must use gold to access characters.
Since all gold and owned items will be reset at the end of gold test, this is the best time to whip out your black hats and try to break the system. Let us know of any stupid or broken ways you find to game the gold system.

    - Autofocus on the "Enter password to join this room" text field when it pops up
    - Removed legacy password change section in the in-game profile (the correct way to change passwords is now through the forum)

    2011-12-01 update:
    Puzzle Strike:
    - Hundred-Fist Frenzy changed to: "Ongoing: Whenever you play a ([fist]), you may reveal a brown [puzzle] chip to crash a [] in your gem pile. Discard if an opponent skips his action phase."
    - New Game now correctly interrupts chip movements in progress (for instance, from bot-vs-bot games after you've conceded) and correctly returns the chips to the bank

    2011-12-01 update:
    Puzzle Strike:

    - Expansion updated to 2.1:

-- Troq's Giant Growth has +brown arrow before the ongoing part.
-- Persephone's Pleasure & Pain, the order of the two clauses is switched to: "Each opponent discards a wound or puts a wound in his bag. Choose a discard pile, then +chip for each wound in it." (So if they choose to avoid getting a wound, then you get to draw a chip because of it.)
-- Persephone's Always in Control reaction changed to: "Become immune to a (fist), attacker gains a wound."
-- Risk to Riskonade changed to: "Ante a 3-gem. All players draw two chips."
-- Hundred-Fist Frenzy has a discard condition. "Ongoing: Whenever you play a fist, you may reveal a brown puzzle chip to crash a gem in your gem pile. Discard at end of turn if your fist is blue shield'd."
-- New rule: Panic Time. N is the number of players alive:
--- The first moment when N piles are empty, Panic Time is activated and everyone antes 2-gems from then on.
--- The first moment when N+1 piles are empty, Danger Time is activated and everyone antes 3-gems from then on.
--- The first moment when N+2 piles are empty, Deadly Time is activated and everyone antes 4-gems from then on.

    - Increased match timer values
    - When you play X-Copy with no valid hand targets, the game now reveals your hand to prove it

-- Zane's Crash Bomb. Has helptext: (You don't get money from crashing.)
-- Now or Later's first part changed from +$1,+1 chip to +2 chips. Second part reworded to "Trash a gem, wound, or both from your hand / discard pile."

-- Iron Defense: Costs 4 instead of 5. The part about "you may play the crash gem as if from your hand" works on the current turn as well as future turns.
-- Gems to Gemonade: Cost 4 instead of 5. Reaction effect changed to: Negate up to three gems sent to you and get +$1 for each negated gem during your next buy phase."

The old dev thread was getting immense, so here's a new one!

    ***

    - When you play X-Copy with no valid hand targets, the game now reveals your hand to prove it
    - EDIT: Fixed getting stealth-dropped from the matchmaking queue if you changed any chat channel or clicked the Yomi game tab.

When Setsuki uses double-take on X-copy on a crash gem, it only crashes 2 gems.

That's correct; the first time you play xcopy you target the crash and play it twice, and the second time you play it you have played the crash so it's not in hand.

My friend started a game without anteing his first 1 gem, the cause I believe is that he switched characters right as I hit start game (last second). log:

    GloriousGloria (Valerie)
GloriousGloria starts their turn and antes a 1-gem
GloriousGloria is now playing as Jaina

end result: he started the game as Jaina but with no gems in his pile. He was first player, neither of us had a 1 gem.

The "Blues Are Good" main action is missing the word "in" (put it in your hand)

While controlling my opponent, he gets the "undo" button, not me. This confused the crap out of me when I was deciding what to make Midori play, when he decided to undo my choice of "discard dragonform, ante a [1]"

This was BBB's first turn, he had an identical turn later on in the same game.

Puzzlebot starts their turn and antes a 1-gem
    Puzzlebot plays Upgrade
    Puzzlebot trashes 1-gem
    Puzzlebot trashes 1-gem
    Puzzlebot gains 1-gem
    Puzzlebot gains 1-gem
Puzzlebot moves to the Buy phase with 0 gem power
    Puzzlebot buys 1-gem
    Puzzlebot discards 1-gem
    Puzzlebot draws 5 chips

Would it be possible to add an option to be random in quickmatch?

When reacting to a red-fist with really annoying it's allowing the initial attacker to counter with a blue. Isn't the RA reaction a BLUE and thus un-reactable? Just curious.

  16. CrystalChaos

    CrystalChaos Moderator Staff Member

Both the main and reaction of RA are red and blue.

Rules question, Option Select played as a Combine doesn't interact with Combinatorics, is this the correct interaction? This seems like the same incorrect interaction Option Select used to have with HHF when played as a [Fist] but maybe it's different because Combinatorics expects a specific chip name rather than a particular property of certain chips.

You can X copy The Hammer. Just saying if we want to avoid kingmaker scenarios copy probably needs a "Non !" clause on it.

    Edit-
Double taking Option select? I'm assuming this is known, but it does seem like a rather powerful interaction for an already powerful character.

  19. Atma

    Atma Active Member

Yeah I'm aware, but just because it's red/blue doesn't mean it's a fist. If someone reacts with a RA and then another person reacts with another, and another, that's broken. There's no such thing as a red fist reaction.

  20. CrystalChaos

    CrystalChaos Moderator Staff Member

It is a red fist reaction. See http://www.fantasystrike.com/guide/index.php/Puzzle_Strike. Search for Really Annoying.

I posted about this a month or two back and Thelo said that that is intentional. Seems wrong to me to be able to work around the discard clause for combinatorics like that, but I guess that's how it is, at least for now.

I referenced the ruling Thelo had heard in another thread a while back and I think Sirlin responded that he changed his mind and he now wanted Option Select to actually become whatever chip its used as, so at this point that may indeed be a bug

Here it is: (From the 1.8 thread): "Regarding Option Select, after the ruling about chips looking for combine, I later thought that maybe at the moment option select becomes something, it really fully becomes it and even has the graphics for it in the online version." ~Sirlin

Puzzlebot played back to back color panics against me. For the second one, it named "brown" when I had no brown banner chips in my hand (which it should have known after the first time I revealed) and didn't use the black arrow to play anything else.

    2011-12-07 update:

    Puzzle Strike:
    - Enabled expansion characters and chips in Quick Match
    - Expansion characters and chips are now always visible (no need to use shift-B)
    - Fixed several rare bugs with joining quick matches
    - Added ranking battle announcements for quick matches
    - Conceding early (first 5 minutes of the game) won't give gold, but it will still affect your ranking

I don't know if this happens all the time (although I know it's happened to others) but if someone quits/is disconnected from a QM they can't rejoin. The rejoining player is made a spectator. If the player who stayed in the game quits and comes back, they also become a spectator.

CORRECTION: If you play quick match, lose and choose to select a new bank, expansion chips ARE NOT visible. Shift+B won't enable them and you'll be unable to swap a chip unless the bank contained 9-10 non-expansion chips. You can also still randomize the bank, but it'll be limited to non-expansion chips.

If you're logged in to the game then purchase a character (from another browser tab), you must log out and log back in if you want to play as the purchased character.

Do you guys need extra developers? I've gotten a ton of interface lag and had a fairly poor experience; The game itself works fine but a lot of the surrounding stuff has been disappointing, for example the login completely fails to remember me, expansion characters only show up half the time, and there have been multiple server resets in the week I've played. The experience was poor enough that I would literally never considering paying a cent for the service if you switch to the f2p/character unlock style, which bothers me because there's enormous potential here and I'm a fan of the game. I'd love to help make this better if you guys need a few more hands.

Edit: A friend of mine purchased chars for Yomi instead of Puzzle Strike accidentally; There's no way to rectify such a simple mistake, and that mistake is incredibly easy to make. His suggestion was that an unlock should unlock for all games... As it is it's like unlocking a character in League of Legends and being told you're only allowed to play it on 3v3 maps until you unlock it the rest of the way. At a minimum there needs to be SOME way to fix that, especially when the characters cost actual money...

What browser are you using? I didn't have this problem from Chrome.

Anyway I agree that the Yomi/Puzzle Strike/Flash Duel (in the future please) pages should be more distinguished than they currently are. It'll get slightly easier once the expansion characters have their official Yomi art but I still suspect some people will get confused. Maybe if the buy icons for Puzzle Strike were circular and the confirmation dialog said "Yes, buy this Yomi Deck" or "Yes, buy this Puzzle Strike Character" instead of simply "Yes, buy". Also maybe the final line in an item's description could be a significantly bigger font:

This item allows you to play as Jaina Stormborne in Puzzle Strike.

    Instead of:

This item allows you to play as Jaina Stormborne in Puzzle Strike.

I used 4000 gold purchasing all 10 base-set characters for Puzzle Strike. Now the server claims that I don't have rights to play as any but the free ones, that I haven't bought anything, and it didn't refund my 4000. Is this something you can fix Thelo?

Edit: Oh, just read your post above. Is this an effect of the gold test that I should expect to be auto-fixed when the gold test ends?

I assume you bought them all before the gold test started right Dan? Because gold test gold appears to be working perfectly... at least for me.

    Yes bbobjs, that's correct.

The window with Unity opened must be refreshed for any unlocked characters to appear. I don't know how possible it'd be for a PUSH-style update to the client, but it'd be super nice.

Does anyone else feel the timer is too fast now? I just played a game where I played Two Truths as Quince and the calculation my opponent needed to survive would be brutal to do in medium timer, he ended up timing out then not being able to countercrash me later in the same turn.

I also timed out myself once during the match.

Also, maybe a better AFK detection? If you hit an AFK person in QM, you have to wait 5 mins for the match to even start, then actually do the playing part while they time out every turn- probably about 5 more minutes but mainly, the second part is irritating. This has happened to me twice in the past 3 days or so (both regulars so I'm sure there's a good reason).

Errr actually, the thing that would help the most is make the game not start if they don't hit ready. Just boot them out of the QM queue I guess?

Sorry about that, I'm proving a point about the system. I agree that it sucks though. QM timer should be like 1 minute, and if the player hasn't readied at the end of it, kick them out of matchmaking.

Haha it's happening to me again right now! I'm just going to concede and play Yomi :p

In puzzle strike quickmatch, if I lose and want to rematch, I cannot change to an expansion character, nor can I change to expansion chips in the bank, nor will Randomize Bank select any expansion chips

I reset everyone's gold and owned items when I started the gold test, so things you bought before that don't count.

    ---

On the PS expansion QM snafus, I'm on it, thanks.

    ---

On the AFK abuse in QM, I'm about to change the system so that:
    1) When you run out of timer on three game turns in a row, you auto-concede with no gold gain, and
    2) When you concede a game early, you are barred from re-entering QM for 5 minutes (aka "deserter penalty" from World of Warcraft).

    Consider your point proven.

Can you describe what you mean by interface lag more precisely? Is it where, for instance, you're dragging a chip, but the chip's position lags behind the mouse cursor (i.e. purely client-side interface lag)? Or is it where you drop a chip on the table, then it takes a second for that chip's effects to run (i.e. the server's response seems delayed)?

Yomi and Puzzle Strike (as well as future games on the website, like Flash Duel) really are completely separate games, so it makes sense to avoid tying up character purchases between those games. It's unfortunate that your friend got mixed-up between the two though, and it highlights that the store needs to be much clearer about that - I'll improve that when I get the chance, thanks for pointing that out.

For now, if you accidentally bought characters for the wrong game, you can PM me from that account, and I'll change it for you.

    ---

On the "Remember Me" feature of logging in, I can only humbly apologize for this. I've had a hell of a lot of bugs with that feature, and it seems that the battle isn't over yet. I'm on it.

For me I get a lot of the second one. The most infuriating instance of this is when I want to end my turn with a playable action in my hand. I hit "end turn," and then there's lag before I get the "Are you sure?" prompt. And if I click too many times while lagging, I end up buying a wound (which I can't undo).

I've attempted another fix to Remember Me, please tell me if you still have trouble with it not remembering you.

Concur with server lag, I have had some occasions recently where I attempt to do some game action, but nothing happens, so I assume I misclicked and try again. For example, I used my last arrow to Self Improvement a 1-gem from discard, and I clicked on that 1-gem several times before it flew up to the bank (and then, since it was now my buy phase, that 1-gem flew back down as a selected purchase. Fortunately I was able to undo that part!)

I'm watching a game right now where one person dc'd, he reconnected (but clearly isn't reconnected as he's not doing anything), he ran out of time but it's not passing his turn- the game is like entirely frozen.

You can view the game, it's still up - cyzo vs ASeriesOfAccidents

If someone disconnects/quits, they usually can't get back in (they become a spectator instead).

Not really a real problem (yet).

Yeah I've played for a while and never really wanted to squelch anyone. OTOH I consider these to be big problems:

    - Not being able to watch while in queue.
    - Loser being able to counterpick in rematches and then leave before you get your counterpick round.
