Yomi on iPad: April 17th

Yomi is finally launching on the iPad on April 17th. Press kit is here.

First, a reminder of what Yomi is: it's a fighting game in card form. Each deck represents a character and the decks follow poker conventions to help you learn the contents of your deck more easily. Numbered cards are "normal" moves, face cards are special moves, and aces are super moves.

Furthermore, Yomi is a competitive game. I'm really sad to have to explain this next part, but these days lots of competitive games have turned their back on what competition is all about: even playfields. An even playfield is when you can play against opponents who don't have material advantage over you because they grinded more or because they spent more. Nowadays, even some of the top e-sports have either forced-grinds before you're allowed to get gameplay-relevant elements, or they put some kind of collectable barrier between you and gameplay elements so that you play weak, gimped stuff while you grind or open packs of random cards to eventually get to the point when you can finally be even with others (and have material advantage over those who aren't there yet.) Those things trample on the spirit of competition, so I'd like to be clear that in Yomi:

    • There's no forced-grind to get characters.
    • There's no random packs of cards that would have you end up with half-assed weak characters.
    • You always have full-powered characters and you play against other players who do too.
Although Yomi looks simple at first, it's really an excellent strategy game. It's something you can play for years and years and continue to get better and better. If you think there's not much to it, watch some of Aphotix's casts and you'll start to realize just how much strategy stuff you aren't aware of. Even *I* realize that watching his casts! Here's a link to our twitch channel:http://www.twitch.tv/sirlingames

    iPad Specifics
The iPad version has cross-platform play with the web version. That means any time you join the quickmatch queue, you could end up playing someone from either version. If you have an account already on fantasystrike.com, you can log in with that in the iPad version to keep your same username and your leaderboard stats.

The iPad version will launch at a price of $9.99, and will come with all 10 base characters from the print version of the game. These characters used to cost $5 each ($50 for 10 decks), so that's kind of ridiculously cheap at $9.99 for 10 decks. It's 1/10th the price of the tabletop version.

The iPad version also has an in-app purchase option for $9.99 to get the 10 expansion characters as a bundle.

    Yomi has these game modes:

    • Tutorial
    • Practice vs CPU
    • Survival
    • Quickmatch (online vs humans)
    • Custom game (online vs humans)
You *can* play offline without an internet connection. There are two difficulties of bots: easy and hard. The easy one is pretty easy and is good for learning basic familiarity with the game. The hard one is quite sophisticated though! If you flop around and play randomly, expect to lose.

There is a leaderboard system where you start out in the "student" ranks, and go up by winning, but don't go down by losing. This is to ease you into things. You also get a longer timer in the student ranks. When you rank up enough, you'll then get to the "master" ranks. Here, you do go down for losing so your rank will become an accurate reflection of your skill.

Yomi lets you save and watch replays of your games. The most fun aspect of this to me is that you can go to the leaderboard, and by everyone's name there is a "view latest replay" link. So you're always one touch away from watching games from all the top players!

    The future
We'd like to add more features, and the more of you who support us, the more we'll be able to do. The first things I'd like to see are an iPhone / iPad Touch version added, as well as translations into a few other languages. After that, we might experiment with random packs of sparkly cards (*cosmetic only*), but not in a way that would restrict you from any gameplay. I'm also looking to add an automated tournaments feature that would let you easily form 8-person tournaments any time. There could be even more, too, if you help spread the word.

    OMG YES!!!
But one stupid question: Will this be released worldwide or USA only? (thinking about Sweden)
I don't know how iPad releases works...

It will be released in all regions, though it's in English only. (We are trying to add more languages in an update later on though.)

After we release Yomi, we should really try to add more features to it through updates, as I've mentioned. But after that, yes I hope to get to Puzzle Strike on iPad as well. Tell your friends to support Yomi though to make it even more likely. ;)

This is a very good development imo and I will be purchasing yomi almost certainly very soon after its release. One question about the character unlocks: if I have purchased expansion characters for use in the PC yomi, will I get to use them for free on the iPad also? If I purchase the iPad version with its ten characters included, will I be able to play those characters on the PC as well?

Woohoo! There's a contest too, actually where you can win a free copy by helping to promote the game.

Things get really messy really fast when developers try to do this... for example it's against Apple's policy to have subscriptions for games, which FantasyStrike has. As a result the games use different business models (FS is F2P, iPad is pay upfront, etc). It's just not very practical to try and unify them in the treacherous waters of the inconsistently applied appstore policies. It's pretty standard practice to charge separately for each platform, especially when they use different business models... but hey, there aren't many RT's yet for those tweets so you've got a good shot at getting one free anyway.

I will be picking this up but will I need to create a new FS.com account or will the game engine know that if I'm connecting via desktop then I get one set of characters and if I'm connecting via iPad I get another set?
  13. Ludeme Games

    Ludeme Games Well-Known Member

You can/should use the same account as your FS account.

This is great, and speaks well for the future of the games online. I can't wait to see how it does.

Unlocking characters for the web version of the game on this site is still done through the "store" link at the top right of this site, no changes there. Buying the iOS version unlocks them on the iOS version.

Star Slayer yeah actually even if you don't have an iPad, you still benefit from this because it means lots more opponents to play against, and a bigger community in general. Easier to get tournaments going. More memes to be created. More cosplay pics.

Yess... let the memes flow throw you...

Oh yeah, I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but there should be a forum link in the app.

Having more players online is the main reason why I am excited about this. I don't have much experience with or information on the mobile gaming market, but I think that online Yomi should work really well on a tablet and is easy to play on the go. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it becomes popular.

Of course you wouldn't be able to play it until you bought the gadget.

There's been quite a bit of press surrounding this release. Here's a roundup of the things I've seen so far

    Pre Release --

    Gameplay Videos

I left out a bunch of Release / Pre-Release links because after a while they aren't really adding anything to the conversation. I'll keep adding to Podcasts / Gameplay Videos / and Reviews

If you find any more feel free to post it here. I'll continue to post more as I find them as well.

@Ludeme Games - Can you tell us how large the app will be (in terms of memory/GB)? Yomi has pushed me over the edge to finally get an iPad and I am trying to gauge how much internal memory I should aim for.
  26. Sirlin

It's pretty tiny, like slightly over 100 MB I think. I know some apps are multiple GB these days though.

I'm curious. What framework was Yomi for iPad made in? I've been assuming that it was made in Unity because the web version is but it occurred me that maybe it was something else?

Yes that is correct! Although it should be in the US shortly. Plays well, drag card slightly down to flip it is a nice solution to flipping that took me a while to get, plays very smoothly, only tried a quick match against yomibot...

Is Lum's End of Turn Poker Hand ability bugged in the iPad version? The card never is highlighted as a valid end of turn option for me. :(
  37. Inkstud

The ability won't be available if you can't create a valid poker hand for it by using the top 2 cards of your discard and up to 3 cards in your hand. Are you sure you had a valid poker hand to play when the ability was unavailable?

  40. Sirlin

You can't, at least not currently. So if you created a count using facebook on the web version, you can log into the forums here with facebook, then change your password. That's the password you can use to log into the iPad version. Sorry that's a bit awkward right now.

First of all, great job Sirlin on the release. It's been a great experience learning about Yomi and having it on my iPad.

One question I've seen echoed in the chat rooms today, as well as in some other forums: any chances of having a single-player campaign mode - similar to a Street Fighter campaign of sorts? I know we have Survival, but it really isn't the same thing, especially since it's never ending.

I wouldn't necessarily ask for having a big story or something like that, but even if it's just a set of matches with a well defined end, it would make wonders for those trying to discover their characters and which better suit their style.

Also, on that note, any chance of having the character reference cards version on the iPad - the ones with the attack, throw, block and dodge stats? Once again, for those who don't know much about the game, it would be great to pick a character that might suit their style best.

Cheers, and all the best. Thanks for Yomi on the iPad!

@Sirlin I am new to the fantasy strike universe, only recently finding out about Yomi and it's existence on release day via pocket tactics.

My jaw literally dropped when the excellent review mentioned you basically "married" my two favorite genres! As a hardcore FGC myself (long Live Killer Instinct!) and Duels Planeswalkers enthusiast, I immediately checked YouTube for gameplay, was impressed and dropped the $20 without even a thought.

Upon learning some of your history (I do my homework) and reading parts of your "play to win" excerpts from your book (which I will buy) and just now reading your opening post in this thread regarding "even playing fields" your mentality and your approach to the competitive scene puts a smile on my face knowing that creator of this IP values skills/strategy over those who spend more money - it's very rare, bless you for that. I can confidently say, you are the real deal and not just in it to get your quick buck and be out. As you mentioned in your book, dedicate time to master a game you know will mature "or" has had the time to mature - in Yomi, because of how you conduct yourself, I see just that - a place to grow, my time/dedication not used in vain. I believe you will nurture it and not let it rot to the corrupt that is pay to win.

It's a beautiful community here as well (not saying it's all Brady Bunch up in here) but the members are respectful and courteous. You draw the right crowd. I am glad to have supported and be a part of this hype your trying to build into something. In the next few months, I will be picking up the entire physical card set just for the principle of the matter and my commitment into helping this wonderful thing grow because I want more of it.

Even though someone on here told me it may not be possible, due to your team size at the moment, but I hope, with all the success that will at some point, arrive your way, it's proceeds will lead into the R&D of future "balanced" unique character archetypes, a rich story mode for all the characters, and just maybe, a console release. Mr. Sirlin, may your business power moves, produce, even more power moves.

Thank you for this amazing game!!!

I just have a simple question I can't seem to find anywhere.

I have unlocked yomi expansion characters. If/when there is an android release, will I be able to log in with my existing account and play with those unlocked characters?

Bonus Question: If/when I buy an IPad, can I log in with my existing account and play with those unlocked characters?

tl;dr Do I have to buy separate versions of yomi?

I think it's safe to assume that what is true for iOS purchases will also hold true for Android, once that exists.
